30 January Martyrs' Day





  • In India, there are six days declared as Martyrs' Day or Sarvodaya day. They are named in honor of those who are recognized as martyrs for the nation.
  • 30 January is the date observed in the national level. The date was chosen as it marks the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948, by Nathuram Godse at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House during his evening prayers. 
  • Nathuram Vinayak Godse was an advocate of Hindu nationalism and a member of the political party Hindu Mahasabha. He was sentenced to death on 8th November 1949.
  • The ideals of Mahatma Gandhi were Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truth). He not only contributed to India's freedom struggle but also inspired people across the world and raise the voice against discrimination of caste, colour, religion. He was a simple man with vast ideas and he always gives a message to others that "Be the change you wish to see in the world".
  • The President, the Vice-President, the Prime Minister, and the Defense Minister of our country get together at the Rajghat to the Samadhi of the Mahatma Gandhi and put down flowers garland at the statue of Father of the Nation’ to pay homage to his contribution for our country.
