24 January National Girl Child Day

 


  • The National Girl Child Day is celebrated in India every year on   January 24. 
  • It was started by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India in 2008
  • National Girl Child Day aims towards promoting awareness about the rights of the girl child and to increase awareness on the importance of girl education, and their health and nutrition.
  • Several campaigns and programs such as Save the Girl Child, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, free or subsidized education for the girl children, reservations for women in colleges and universities have been initiated to reduce this discrimination.
  • Earlier the theme of ‘Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow.
  • The NGCD 2021 is being celebrated across the nation with objectives of generating awareness on the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and create a positive environment around valuing the girl child.
  • The celebrations also marked the anniversary of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme.
  • The state of Punjab has announced January 2021 to be the "month of Girl Child". The scheme Dheeiyan Di Lohri has also been launched. 
  • The Odisha state government honours the individuals and organisations who have worked towards the cause of child marriage free villages on January 24 - the National Girl Child Day.  Odisha has a child marriage prevalence of 21.3 % as against the national average of 26.8 %.
